| SAFETY PRECAUTIONS |
Installation of all valve-regulated batteries should be performed only by personnel familiar with batteries and proper battery safety guidelines. All valve-regulated batteries have the electrolyte immobilized within the cell, but the risk of electrical hazards still exists.
To guard against injury ALWAYS follow these important safety precautions during battery handling, installation and maintenance. |
| 1. |
Wear ANSI*-approved eye protection: safety glasses, protective goggles and/or face shield. |
| 2. |
Wear suitable clothing to protect hands, body and face, such as acid-resistant gloves, protective apron and safety glasses. Sealed lead-acid batteries contain SULFURIC ACID which can cause damage if it comes into contact with skin or clothing. |
| 3. |
DO NOT wear jewelry, metal belt buckles or dangling items that could come into contact with the battery. |
| 4. |
Use tools with insulated handles. Using uninsulated tools could result in burns, battery damage or ignition. |
| 5. |
Allow for proper ventilation in the work area. |
| 6. |
Cigarettes, sparks or flames could cause the battery to explode. KEEP ALL IGNITION SOURCES AND OPEN FLAMES AWAY FROM BATTERY. |
| 7. |
Never lean over battery when installing, testing, connecting, disconnecting or charging. |
| 8. |
Batteries can be heavy. Make needed arrangements to safely lift the battery. |
| 9. |
DO NOT place any tools on top of the battery. Keep battery surface clear of objects. |
| 10. |
Do not drop battery. Damage may result. |
| 11. |
DANGER: DO NOT alter, play with, or remove pressure relief valves. |
| 12. |
In the event of an accident and/or contact with Sulfuric Acid, immediately flush with water and consult a physician at once. |

* American National Standards Institute
* Always follow local, state and national electric codes.
* Battery Assembling: |
| 1. |
Refer to all cabinet and/or rack manufacturer assembly instructions prior to battery assembly. |
| 2. |
Upon receipt and prior to installation, inspect the battery for damage and replace if the battery is not in good condition. Check for apparent damage, electrolyte leakage, and damaged or loose terminals. If there is any evidence of these or any other suspicious conditions, the battery must be replaced. |
| 3. |
Before installing connectors, lightly clean intercell contact surfaces with a NON-metallic brush. |
| 4. |
For a battery assembly or for SERIES connections, place batteries in a sequence so the positive post of one battery is connected to the negative post of the next battery. |
| 5. |
For a battery assembly, place ALL intercell connectors into desired locations for final alignment. |
| 6. |
Using lockwasher, torque all connections to 40 ± 2 Nm or 29 ± 2 ft-lb. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER TORQUE. |
| 7. |
Upon completion of torquing, read the voltage of the battery assembly to that establish all individual batteries are connected properly. When batteries are connected in a SERIES, the total voltage capacity reading should be approximately equal to the sum of the capacities of the individual batteries. If the assembly voltage measurement is less than the designated optimal number, recheck the connections to ensure correct polarity. |
| 8. |
It is IMPORTANT to record intercell connection resistance and the method of measurement as a reference for future maintenance needs. (See REMCO maintenance report at the back.) Reassemble any connection within the assembly having a resistance measurement of 20% or more of the average number for all like connections. |
| 9. |
Label all racked batteries for easy identification and record keeping. Standard labeling practices advise to start with the number 1 on the cover of the positive battery terminal and follow the electrical circuit with sequential numbering. |
| 10. |
Always recharge batteries immediately after use. Do not charge battery in an upside-down position. |
| |
|
| Maintenance |
| An annual inspection is required to maximize battery life. Always wear protective gear and observe all safety procedures during any battery inspection. |
| 1. |
Observe ambient temperatures. |
| 2. |
Visually inspect the battery. |
| 3. |
Record the total voltage of the battery assembly. |
| 4. |
Record the charger voltage. |
| 5. |
Record the voltage of all individual batteries. |
| 6. |
Inspect all connections. |
| 7. |
Record micro-ohm readings. If any differ ±20% from the initial reading, re-torque any needed connections and replace any problematic batteries. |
| |
|
| Installation Procedures - Handling Precautions: |
| 1. |
At all times during battery handling, installation and maintenance ALWAYS wear proper protective gear. |
| 2. |
Never use terminal posts to lift the battery. |
| 3. |
Only new and/or fully charged batteries should ever be used. |
| 4. |
Never discharge battery below the specified final voltage. |
| 5. |
Clean all cabinets, racks and batteries with soapy water only. DO NOT use solvent. |
| 6. |
It is not required, but is strongly recommended, to use insulation covers to avoid electrical shocks. |
| 7. |
Never torque over 40 ± 2 NM or 29 ± 2 ft-LB |
| 8. |
The maximum allowable weight for the REMCO stationary battery handle is 70kg/150lbs. |
